Day 1:  Scenic Design = Feels Like > Looks Like 

​

1.)  Reviewed: Before any set building begins, scenic designers envision/design the "world of the play" (what the musical/play should "feel" like & then what it should look like based on the director/designer's interpretation of the show).

​

2.)  Discussed how this course will teach you to look at things like an artist/designer might. 

First assignment:  In Google Classroom, go to the assignment entitled "Scenic Design Elements (From FEELING to Design)" and complete the following:

1.)  Look through ALL of the stage photos provided, paying close attention to those which you find interesting/intriguing/beautiful.

2.) Choose the top 3-4 photos that you like the most and put those at the TOP of the slide deck.

3.) Add a text box that describes what YOU feel the stage picture "FEELS LIKE" (use feeling words:  foreboding, depressing, magical, etc.)

4.)  Next, investigate the image and try to determine what makes the stage moment feel that way to you.  Add a second text box that lists/describes the specific theatrical ELEMENTS that contribute to the feeling word you chose.  (Stage elements such as:  colors, lighting, arrangement of set pieces, etc.)

*If absent, be sure to follow the above directions and complete the assignment in Google Classroom.

3.)  Discussed who builds the scenic designers' visions (Set Construction Supervisor with Crew of builders, painters, and artisans)

4.)  Discussed:  In order to effectively work in a scene shop, you need to...

• work together as a team

• work safely, quickly, and to a designer's plan

• know some stage basics

• know the proper tools and their uses

​

5.)  Learned the names of Fastening Tools  (see "Fastening Tools" page in your C in Google Classroom and fill in the following tool names).  If absent, be sure to fill in the names of these tools in your CLASS NOTES in Google Classroom (page 3).

Day 2: Fastening Tool Tutorials

2.) Ms. Price reminded students to finish yesterday's "Scenic Design Elements"  assignment in Google Classroom if they haven't already.  (It is for a grade.)

 

3.) Reviewed who builds a set and how.  Reviewed "Fastening Tools".

4.)  Learned the names of Painting Tools  (see "Painting Tools" page in your Class Notes in Google Classroom).  If ABSENT, be sure to add these tool names in your notes....

  • how to drive a screw into wood / drilling pilot holes

  • how to drive a screw out of wood

  • how to swap out the bits

• 1/3 class with KP:  Paint Basics

  • where to find things in paint area (stir sticks, paint key, rollers, covers, trays, tarps, paint, spray paint​, etc.

  • how to properly open and close a paint can

  • how/why to stir paint thoroughly

  • how to properly clean a brush & roller

  • where/when to use tarps

  • painting patterns ("W" for best coverage)

  • when to use primer

  • where/how to spray paint 

• 1/3 of class did a self-directed scene shop scavenger hunt​

• If absent, be sure to let Ms. Price know when you return so you can get caught up in the above skills

Day 3: Types of Stages / Tool Tutorial

 

1.) Reviewed:  In theatre, we want to elicit an audience response (make them feel a certain way) when we create the "world of the play".

​

2.)  Discussed how the TYPE of performance space (stage) used impacts the WAY a set is designed/used.

​

3.) Learned about the 4 different types of performance spaces (stages) by watching KP's Theatre Class - Types of Stages (click on link) and taking notes (use CLASS NOTES in Google Classroom - "Types of Stages").  If absent, be sure to watch the video and take notes in Google Classroom.

4.) Observed/Analyzed various photos of shows performed in OHS's Black Box Theatre.

​

5.) Finished tool scene shop skill rotations/scavenger hunt from last class. 

​

Day 4: Stage Terms / Tool Tutorial

​

1.) Learned about various stage terms by watching KP's Theatre Class - Stage Terms (click on link) and taking notes (use CLASS NOTES in Google Classroom - "Stage Terms").  If absent, be sure to watch the video and take notes in Google Classroom.

​

2.) Finished tool scene shop skill rotations/scavenger hunt from last class.  (Ms. Price took a portion of the class who had already finished their rotations on a tour of the theatre spaces - cat walks, orchestra pit, etc.)
