Day 1:  Fastening Tools & Paint Tutorials (in scene shop)

1.) Reviewed who builds a set and how.  Reviewed "Fastening Tools".

​

2.)  Learned the names of Painting Tools  (see "Painting Tools" page in your Class Notes in Google Classroom).  If ABSENT, be sure to add these tool names in your notes....

3.) Went to the scene shop to learn and perform tasks in rotating groups:

• 1/3 class with Logan :  Air Compressor & Gun + Hammers

  • how to load the staple gun​

  • how to attach the staple gun to the air compressor

  • how to fill and empty the air compressor tank

  • how to use the gun to staple (safely)

  • how to pull staples out of a board with pliers

  • (individually practiced all of the above)

• 1/3 class with John:  Drills & Impact Drivers

  • how to attach a battery / where to charge the battery​

  • using the level on the drill 

  • how to drive a screw into wood / drilling pilot holes

  • how to drive a screw out of wood

  • how to swap out the bits

  • (individually practiced all of the above)

• 1/3 class with KP:  Paint Basics

  • where to find things in paint area (stir sticks, paint key, rollers, covers, trays, tarps, paint, spray paint​, etc.

  • how to properly open and close a paint can

  • how/why to stir paint thoroughly

  • how to properly clean a brush & roller

  • where/when to use tarps

  • painting patterns ("W" for best coverage)

  • when to use primer

  • where/how to spray paint 

• If absent, be sure to let Ms. Price know when you return so you can get caught up in the above (required) skills

Day 2: Measuring & Cutting Tools Tutorials (in scene shop) 

​

 1.) Reviewed who builds a set and how.  

​

2.)  Learned about the materials used to build flats & platforms (the building blocks of sets):

• 2x4's (used to build the frame/base of platforms)

• 1x4's (used to build the frame of flats)

• luan (thin 1/4" thick wood sheets used to cover Hollywood flats)

• plywood (thick 4x8 wood sheets used to cover platforms that need to be load-bearing)

• OSB (thick compressed wood 4x8 sheets sometimes used to cover platforms)

• masonite (a type of hardboard made of steam-cooked/pressure molded wood fibers; one side is smooth, the other is rough - NOT used much on sets)

• particle board (wood product made of wood chips & shavings bound together with resin; not used to build sets b/c it's far to weak - NOT used on sets)

3.) Learned about flats/platforms and basic techniques/materials used to build each.

• Flats = set walls (Two types:  Hollywood or Broadway)

• Platforms = load bearing levels for sets/actors

• Hollywood flats = literally flat (build with 1x4's laid flat) - see examples in Google Classroom CLASS NOTES (Flats & Platforms)

• Broadway flats = built 3-dimensionally so that the structure can help support the wall - see examples in Google Classroom CLASS NOTES (Flats & Platforms)

• If ABSENT, be sure to fill in the following in your Google Classroom CLASS NOTES (Flats & Platforms) 

  • #1:  Broadway flats​

  • #2: Hollywood flats

  • #3: Plywood (3/4")

3.)  Learned the names of Measuring & Cutting Tools  (see "Measuring & Cutting Tools" page in your CLASS NOTES in Google Classroom).  If ABSENT, be sure you add these terms to your Class Notes in Google Classroom.

1. tape measure (sometimes also called steel tape)

2. L square (for getting right angles)

3. speed square (sometimes called "carpenter's square")

4. Level (for getting things level horizontally and plumb vertically)

5. Chalk line (pull from point A to point B then snap!)

6. "C" clamp (a clamp shaped like a "C")

7. Quick Clamp 

8. Chop/Mitre Saw (for straight or mitred cuts)

9. Circular Saw (hand-held saw with circular blade)

10.  Jig Saw 

11. Reciprocating Saw / Sawzall  (because it "saws ALL!")

4.) Went to the scene shop and learned about various Cutting Tools/Tasks while in rotating groups  :

• 1/3 class with Logan:  How to Fasten 2x4's at right angles using a Carpenter's Square (platforms)

• 1/3 class with John:  How to Fasten 2x4's at right angles using Carpenter's Square (flats)

• 1/3 class with KP: How to use a Chop/Mitre Saw

Day 3 : Measuring & Cutting Tools Tutorials  (in scene shop) 

 

1.) Reviewed types of wood (used to make flats/platforms), 2 types of flats, and platforms, and Measuring/Cutting tools.

​

2.) Finished rotating skill groups from last class.

​

Day 4:  Skill Make-up / Scene Shop Scavenger Hunt 

(Ms. Price gone today)

​

Students who had not done any of the skill or tool tutorials were provided with individualized learning with John/Logan. The rest of the class participated in a Scene Shop Scavenger Hunt (paper assignment given to students by John).

​
