Acting:  Week 6
(September 25-29, 2023)

Important terms are in RED.

Google Classroom assignments are in BLUE.

If ABSENT, you are REQUIRED to read / understand / do all activities posted for that day, even if it's not an "assignment".  

DAY 1: Building Blocks of a "good" story

 

1.) Participated in a class activity led by Ms. Price:   "one-word story".

2.) Discussed our next unit:  STORY

3.) Journaled (in Google Classroom PROCESS JOURNAL under week 6)  If absent be sure to do on your own.

Journal Title:  "Great" Stories

  • (In your opinion) What does a great story "look" like?

  • (In your opinion) What moves a story forward?

4.) Watched a video by Ira Glass (0:00-3:04) in which he discusses anecdotes & bait in storytelling.  If absent be sure to do on your own.

  • Note:  Ira Glass is a radio host of a storytelling program ("This American Life").  Although in this video he discusses stories told on his radio show/podcast, most of the principles he discusses apply to stories told on stage, as well.

5.)  Watched a short film by film-maker Caleb Slain (Lost & Found Shop). Pay attention to the "anecdote" and "bait" offered in the story by the filmmaker.  Discussed.

** Remember:  If you want a Re-take on Types of Stages, Stage Directions, Stage Terms talk to Ms. Price and complete (on your own time) before FRIDAY!

DAY 2: Creating & Rehearsing "story"

 

1.) Reviewed "anecdote" and "bait" in storytelling.

 

2.)  Listened to 3 different clips played by Ms. Price and responded in Google Classroom PROCESS JOURNAL:  "Feels Like" and "Looks Like" for each clip. 

NoteThis activity will be used to create our 4th (and final) scene for our IB Summative:  Thinking Creatively.

3.) Received instructions for our final acting scene (for IB Summative "Thinking Creatively")

  • With a partner (of your choice), create a GOODBYE SCENE to music (choose clip #1, #2, or #3)

    • Be SPECIFIC in your CHOICES (character, setting, why's, etc.)

    • Your STORY should have a beginning, conflict, sequence of actions, and resolution (NOT the same action over and over).  

    • No talking (or mouthing words).  Work to SHOW more than you tell.  

4.) Collaborated with a partner to develop a concept, artistic intention, and strong story for a Goodbye Scene to the music clips shared in class.

DAY 3: Abandoning "bad" ideas

1.) Watched Ira Glass on Storytelling - part II (0:00-3:08) and discussed why letting some ideas "die" can sometimes allow better ideas to "live". 

2.) Analyzed the story structure of a Goodbye Scene performance by former Acting students.

3.) Reviewed 3 different music clips played by Ms. Price and added to ideas while listening to each music clip again.  (How can you make your idea even stronger?  Any new ideas?).  Completed in Google Classroom PROCESS JOURNAL

4.) Reviewed instructions for our final acting scene (for IB Summative "Thinking Creatively")

  • With a partner (of your choice), create a GOODBYE SCENE to music (choose music clip #1, #2, or #3)
